    Looks good, pumps great, another success. Very creative idle stop. Slipping knobs can be maddening. The mixture needles can get very tight and make it tough on the knob. 1st try "exercising" it with knob off using needle nose, or just use needle nose to back it out and remove it. Once it starts moving, the knob can often be used to remove completely. Lightly spray the needle/bore with your favorite liquid elixir (that won't plug the idle passages, oils are fine) and screw back in, then they're usually freed up enough to not strip the mixture knob and most knobs will still work. You can also heat the mixture tangs and bend them inward to get a better bite. Normally, you only need to bend one or 2 tangs inward. Doesn't take much heat to "re-thermoset" the plastic. It's nice of you to put these videos out for novices, I'm sure they're greatly appreciated!

    That "mustache" water spray is because the motor is mainly mounted probably too deep! At WOT the AV Plate should be riding just about at the surface of the water. And, also at the same time... trimmed just down from the point where the motor is starting to VENTILATE & the rpm's climb radically higher while making no more speed increase. Also with that, the OPTIMAL rpms should be within the MIDDLE of the 5,000-6,000 factory WOT range (5,500 rpms) of course! 😊

    Is it only me or maybe have you switched to a different camera microphone but the engine appears to "sing" at WOT ? Besides, the optimal trim adjustment really minimizes that "mustache" water spray in the back ... he, he, he !

    Can you do the 35 hp carb swap on a ‘79 25 hp or this specifically for the 80’s models?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1 7 годин тому

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. It's funny, the earlier 25's up to 76 came with a size 72d high speed jet/orifice which is bigger than any 35. The 79 25 went down to a 49d and the 79 35 has a 59d, that's a pretty big jump in size. So what I'm saying is you'll have to do a little homework, what year 35 carb is it, will you need to swap the intake manifold too, will the intake fit, blah blah blah, that kind of stuff. Or you could just slap the 35 carb on and see what happens! You can always take it off. Thanks again !

    A lovely engine. I have an Evinrude Sport Twin 9 1/2 HP from 1970. Got it for 140 bucks in running condition (ignition system with new condensers, points, etc). Persistence and some good videos like yours help a lot with these old 2 stroke bangers. :) If taken care of these old things run forever.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1 2 дні тому

      Yep. You sound just like me. One thing I always say is Johnson / Evinrude is the Briggs & Stratton of the outboard world! And as the story goes, either Briggs or Stratton joined forces with Evinrude way back in the day. Can't remember which one off hand. I think it was Strattan.

  • @kalleklp7291
    @kalleklp7291 2 дні тому

    A lot of people don't realize how much work there is in these old things. At least one has to take the carburetor apart and look at the ignition. There are many hours of work involved but the end result is worth it. Also, one gets to know the engine AND one can take out on the big waters with ease in mind knowing everything has been checked and repaired. :) I'm waiting for coils for my little Johnson Seahorse 3 HP. We'll use it as a backup motor when it's finished.

  • @kalleklp7291
    @kalleklp7291 2 дні тому

    Great video series. :) Yeah, the coils look as bad as mine on my 1964 Johnson Seahorse 3 HP. As they age they get porous and crap out. It's better to change them, even if they can still function than to lay out on the water and be sorry about it.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1 2 дні тому

      Hey! Thanks for subscribing & watching my vids! Really appreciate it! Yes coils will crap out even when they look good. They will test/ohm out fine but break down when they start to heat up. Then you think you have a fuel issue because the coils tested fine. Thanks !

  • @kalleklp7291
    @kalleklp7291 3 дні тому

    I can't figure out why they made that pull starter so idiotic! On my Evinrude Sport Twin (1970), it's all readily accessible. You could even change the rope out on the water if need should be. However, if they're taken care of these old bangers run forever and a Sunday. The fuel pump is prone to fail if they are old. Also, the coils are often rotten and need to be changed. Yours look nice so someone has been in there. Good job .. :)

    Is that a 20" shaft? Jack plate installed? Assuming 15" transom on that Jon boat. I've got a 73 Collins with a 15" transom and a 1975 Evinrude 25hp 20" shaft. Can't get it to plane in any shaft position. Anti-ventilation plate is two inches below the transom on mine. Love your videos!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 дні тому

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in! No it's a short shaft. Yes 15" transom. Yeah the more outboard in the water the more drag. Well you could just remove the 5" extension and look for a short shaft on ebay then cut the shift shaft down 9" I believe it was, or do the jack plate thing. There are easy DIY plans on the internet and pretty cheap to do. Sometimes you can find jack plates on craigslist and facebook marketplace at a good price too. Check them out! The results were in the next episode, Prop Chop 1st Run, and at first, it did a little better, rpm's went up which was the point of the experiment. Also in that episode, I tweaked my WOT timing, and the Prop did very good, rpm's went way up and a gain in speed. I'm not done ruining it, still have to do the second chop and some tweaking on it. • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1 4 дні тому

      Hey. the 2 marks on the throttle cam are for setting the slow speed timing. the cam follower or roller shouldn't touch the cam, until you advance the throttle handle, the roller should start to make contact with the cam just as it passes the first mark and the carburetors butterflies should start to open as the roller is between the 2 marks.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1 4 дні тому

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The top one is the stop screw for WOT , the bottom is the stop screw for Idle. Don't mess with them unless you know how to set them. Your best bet is to get an OMC service manual specific to your year and model. Try Ebay for a good used one. It will tell you how to link & sync your outboard, it will save you time and it will have a great troubleshooting section too! Thanks again & Stay tuned !
